It’s easy to feel your undergraduate major will define your entire career trajectory, but for most careers related to the natural sciences, you have much more flexibility. Your major provides a foundation of knowledge and skill development, but your experiences and explorations beyond the classroom also shape your career path.  

Experiment and Explore 

College is a time of self-discovery and personal growth. Engage in diverse experiences to learn more about yourself and the life you want to lead. Seek out opportunities like undergraduate research, education abroad, and civic engagement. Gain practical work experience, actively participate in class, and be curious. These activities not only enhance your resume but also offer valuable insights into different fields and potential careers. The more you experiment and reflect on these experiences, the clearer your career preferences will become. 

Consider the Coursework 

Different majors require successful completion of different coursework. Understand degree requirements by visiting the webpage of a potential major or connecting with the academic advisor for that major.  

If you have a particular career in mind that needs specific coursework, make sure the major either includes that coursework or allows you to complete the coursework as elective credits.
