Service Learning and Community Engagement

MSU’s Center for Community Engaged Learning defines community engaged learning as “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community partnerships with instruction and critical reflection to enrich the student learning experience, teach civic and social responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

Many NatSci students care deeply about helping others and tackling complex problems. Community engaged learning offers students the opportunity to connect what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations and make a positive impact on the communities in which they live, work, and study.

MSU offers many opportunities for students to participate in community engagement and volunteer service, both in the local area and across the globe. Some opportunities are course-related, some require an application, and some are open to all students. There is something for everyone to be involved in! Visit the Center for Community Engaged Learning to find an opportunity that’s right for you.

Tips for getting started

  • Start with what you are passionate about and ask yourself questions like:
  • What causes are important to you?
  • What populations do you want to work with (i.e. students, children, elderly, low-income, cancer patients, etc.)?
  • How much time can you commit?
  • Use the resources above to find volunteer and community engagement opportunities
  • Join a student organization and participate in group volunteer activities
  • Get creative and consider creating your own fundraiser or charity drive, or developing a student organization that hasn't been created yet
