Major Requirements
Visit the Office of the Registrar‘s website for detailed information about requirements for the BA & BS
Provides a foundation in the various fields of chemistry and related sciences. The BS degree is for students planning careers in the chemical industries, forensic science, government labs, or who intend to do graduate work in chemistry. The BA degree is intended for those students desiring a less specialized background in chemistry, like those pursuing teaching or professional school.
Skills and Competencies
- Analytical Thinking – Analyze chemical data and solve complex problems using advanced techniques
- Technical Proficiency – Utilize sophisticated laboratory equipment and perform intricate procedures with precision, including chemical synthesis, instrumental analysis, and safety protocols, ensuring accuracy and reliability in experimental work
- Scientific Communication – Present and report scientific findings clearly to various audiences
This Major Could Be For You If:
- You are fascinated by the properties, reactions, and composition of substances
- You enjoy solving complex problems through experimental and analytical methods
- You want to gain skills in both theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry, including laboratory techniques
Common Questions
What’s the difference between the BA & BS?
The BA offers a broader, less specialized education with more flexibility for combining chemistry with other fields, making it ideal for careers in education, technical writing, or pre-law. The BS provides a thorough and focused curriculum with extensive lab work and research, preparing students for technical careers in the chemical industry, research, or further graduate studies.
What makes this major unique?
The major is unique for its approach to both fundamental and advanced chemistry, including four principal areas: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Additionally, it offers flexibility with both BA and BS options to cater to different career goals and interests. The program emphasizes practical laboratory experience and research, providing students with valuable skills applicable to a wide range of professions.
