Summer Internship Worksheet
Step 1: Decide on an industry of interest
The internship process can be stressful, take the time to focus and reflect on the internship experience that will benefit you the most. Ask yourself the following questions to help narrow down the vast amount of internship opportunities available to you.
- What do I want to gain from an internship?
- Is an internship this summer necessary for my career path?
- Where do I want to work? (Ex: from home, the city, close to home)
- How do I want to apply my coursework?
- What interests do I want to explore?
- When do I want to complete an internship?
- What skills do I want to utilize?
- What type of organization/company do I want to intern for?
Goals for my internship:___
Step 2: Prepare for the first impression
A company’s first impression of you usually begins with your resume and cover letter. To make sure both are up to par, consider these:
- Write down any past/present jobs
- Gather information on your past and present education (GPA, graduation year, university, major, minor)
- Brainstorm and write down any volunteer work, extracurriculars, or awards that you’ve been apart of
- Consider skills that may be helpful for a possible employer, take note of said skills
- Take part in the Career Service Network’s Resume and Cover Letter workshops
- Note your contact information, use an email that you check often
Step 3: Jump into the job market
Now that you’ve taken the time to reflect and prepare, it’s time to put yourself out there in the eyes of employers. It’s time to seek out opportunities and apply for positions! The more you apply for, the more opportunities that may arise. Remember you may not get every position, it’s normal not to, but you will never have a chance if you don’t apply. Consider these steps to put your best foot forward:
- Research available internships on LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake, etc.
- Volunteer or work to increase community service hours
- Update your resume if anything changes
- Reach out to friends and family on possible opportunities within their workplace
- Update your LinkedIn and build your network
- Check your email and stay up to date
